Mountain Meadows Massacre Descendants

The Mountain Meadows Massacre Descendants site is dedicated in loving memory to our ancestors who died in the massacre at Mountain Meadows, Utah September 7-11th, 1857.

120 men, women and children traveling in the wealthy wagon train headed to California were killed at Mountain Meadows. Only 17 children were allowed to live–all under the age of 7.

This site is for the descendants and family members of those who died at the Massacre so that we can share family histories, photographs, remembrances and research. We welcome and value input and expertise from historians and others interested in the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

  1. Solomon Wood and his brother were my ggg-uncles, how can I converse with other desendents

    • Hi Billy. So, SOOOOOO sorry for this slow reply. I’m trying to find someone who has time to answer each comment. Anyway, we have several Wood family members in our group. Contact Dianna Gencarelli (Wood Family) at dgencarelli1@cox.net. We’d love to have you join our group! Our annual meeting will be held this year in Harrison, Arkansas on September 11th.

    • William Wood was my ggg grandfather. You can contact me Cindywalker1120@gmail.com.

      • Solomon and William would were also my great great grandUncles. They were brothers to Nancy Wood who married Thomas Patterson, whom are my great-great-grandparents. I too would like to correspond with other wood descendants.
        Dianna Gencarelli
        Tulsa, Ok

    • Hi Billy. Sorry, haven’t been surfing the net much of late, been focusing on my husbands side of the “family tree” Anyways, William Wood (Solomon’s brother) was my Great-Great Grandfather. My email is jowood419@gmail.com if you want to connect up. I have quite a few Wood family members on my ancestry tree, so if you want to share your email, I can hook you in and you can see.

    • I am a direct descendant of The Wood Family

    • William Edward Wood was our GGG Grandfather & Solomon our uncle. We actually just visited the Massacre Site this week in Utah & anxious to get involved. There are dozens of his descendants in Texas.

      • Leonard Griffiths here in Levelland, Texas. My family is descended from William Campbell Beller, Jr.(My Mother’s maiden name was Beller). In my book “The First 9/11 in America” in the Novel portion of this historical/novel, I took the liberty of choosing Solomon Wood to become engaged to Melissa Ann Beller. Melissa’s 12 year old brother David Beller was my gggreat Uncle. In the book I took the identity of David. It is interesting (at least to my wife and I) that David concluded grade 6 in a one room school house at Crooked Creek in 1857. I also concluded the sixth grade in a one room school at nearby Rogers, Arkansas, only that was 92 years later. I think you will find the story of Solomon and Melissa Ann to be quite interesting. Just think, we almost became kinfolk in that novel.

      • Descendants of William Edward Wood might be interested in the fact that I (Leonard Griffiths) brought Solomon Wood and Melissa Ann Beller together in romance in the novel portion of the historical/novel “The First 9/11 in America”.

      • My Gg-grandmother is Nancy Wood, sister to your Edward, also to Solomon and William Wood who were killed at Mountain Meadow. Their father was George Wood who married Nancy Coker. The Wood brothers and the Coker brothers were gun toten rough guys. The
Marion Co. Sheriff was even afraid of them. There is a book called Ozark Cousins they have articles about them in the book. There is a series 1 and 2, can’t remember which series contained their info. Just ask before you purchase, should you decide to. Their g-grand father is Obediah Wood who fought in the American Revolution.

    • They are my GGG Grandfather & his brother

  2. Soloman Wood and his brother William Wood are my GG Uncles. You may contact me at dgencarelli1@cox.net.

    • Hi Dianna. Wanted to make sure you were aware of our annual meeting in Harrison, Arkansas on the 11th of September, 2015. Would love to have you join us. pat.norris1502@gmail.com

  3. To all of the dear decedents of those brave and wonderful victims of the Mountain Meadows Massacre: You are all loved and are very special because you are a living link to this heart breaking event. Surprisingly, I’ve never heard of this horrendous offense until these past few days and it deeply broke my heart to discover it, despite the fact that it happened 160 years ago and it has no relation to me at all, except that these innocent people are fellow Americans. I know that I would have loved all of these brave adventurers on this Fancher-Taylor wagon train. All of these brave families that gathered all of their possessions and livestock, and were brimming with excitement to be traveling to a new land that they felt was full of fresh promise and happiness for themselves and their children. Now, as I even just go to the grocery store, I see wonderful people walking around buying food off of the shelves, and I think these people are no different than those innocent massacred on Sept. 11 1857, and it just breaks my heart to think how anyone would want to hurt them. Partly because they never had their justice for this terrible offence and partly because I’ve never known about it until after my 67th birthday. I just feel that this sad event should not go unnoticed by anyone.

  4. I am a descendant of the Dunlap family. The Great Great Great Granddaughter of Jesse Dunlap Jr & Mary Wharton Dunlap that were brutally murdered in this massacre. Along with 7 of their 10 children that were brutally murdered. Out of the 3 surviving children, were my 2 Aunts and my Great Great Grandmother Rebecca Jane Dunlap Evins. Please add my email address for any communications about information about my relatives please. kasey@vpolestudio.com

    • Mary Wharton Dunlap is my great great grandmother ‘ s sister.

      r.

  6. anyone have more info on the ceremony to return remains on Sept 9 2017?? a skull and more were collected by the military in 1859 and stored in DC ever since..

    • If you go to mmmd1857.org, click on news and then the June 2017 newsletter, you will find the info you are looking for.

  7. Im deeply sorry for that horrible event. I would like to attend this year anniversary and honor the dead. Im from Colombia, live in Orem. How can I get there?

  8. I have just recently discovered that I am a descendant of the Tackett’s that suffered through this. I’m not exactly sure how, but if someone could fill me in I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks!

    • Hi Christina. Sorry for the slow reply! This might help….To help with genealogy questions, click the “Massacre” button, then click on “genealogy”.

  9. Is Bob Fancher alive is there a contact number for family. His gggrandfather was also mine. He came from first wife I came from second wife.Would like to get in contact with family.

    • Hi Linda. No, sadly Bob died a couple of years ago. I am a Fancher. Could I maybe help?

  10. In response to Christina Bentley, I also am a Tackett descendant. You left no way to contact, but I am at StevenLFoster@Yahoo.com. Would love to compare notes with another “cousin”. Steve Foster

  11. I believe that I am the great great great grandson of William Wood whose pregnant wife was left home with a child while he and his brther Soloman traveled west to secure a home. They were in charge of cattle to my understanding. His wife lost the baby and his other child later in life died of pneumonia in jail awaiting trial for stabbing a man he found in the act of sleeping with his wife. So I have been told.

    • You will be my cousin then. I descend through Nancy Wood, sister of William Wood. Nancy is my Great-great grandmother. Have you gone to any of the MMM reunions?

  12. Is there any news on the location and dates for the annual meeting this year?

  13. What are the dates of the next annual meeting? Also, does anyone have any information about survivor Mary Miller? Malinda Cameron Scott Thurston lost track of her niece and nephews.

  14. When I did what Mormons are suppose to do, study things out in theirs mind… this whole event became very overwhelming for me. It was like the internet was giving me clues to the truth. First when I read a quote from Joseph Smith Jr. That “He feared for his life because he spoke out against Brigham young and his teaching of blood atonement. When I learned that Brigham young taught “killing you neighbor is a way of loving your neighbor as yourself… are you willing to do this?”. “This is not what the Lord ment,if I caught one of my wife’s in adaultry, I would put a javelin threw her heart. When I read that Brigham young organized the robbery of the wagon train, in that first raid 8 people were killed. The information for me was when i read about the killing of the children in the wagon train and that the only ones that were saved were under the age of eight. I got so sick inside because I knew that Mormons believe that every child under the age of eight is without sin and I knew that Brigham teaching of blood atonement had been carried out. These early saints believed because of the teaching of their prophet that killing these people was a way of loving their neighbor as themself because they were helping them to receive interance into the kingdom of heaven by paying for the blood of the prophet Joseph Smith and or parsley p. prait by their own blood being shed, according to the teaching from their prophet Brigham young. Joseph Smith Jr was right, this was a faults doctrine and teaching. Which lead to killing of men, women and children.
I will write more latter, it s just to overwhelming to grasp it all. That universities are named after this man, that t-shirts and hats bear his name. That his picture is put on books and taught at church. Brigham talked the Indians into robbing the wagon train along with the help of early saints dressed up like Indians. If I had my friends Rob a bank and eight people were killed I would be put on trial for murder, like charley madson or hitler. If I billed the United States government for the robbery of the wagon train and recieved compensation for it, I would be thrown in jail for fraud. But not Brigham young, he makes sick to my stonach,

    • I think about this awful massacre every day. i don’t know any of the descendents, but I pray for them every day because I know that is what those precious immigrants who were ruthlessly betrayed, bushwhacked and their bodies left in the field to be consumed by animals and openly decompose, would want me to do.
I know that Alex Fancher and his party of men, women and children would want all who hear of their plight to tell the true story to as many others as we can and shed light to what the perpetrators would want left in the dark forever.
Let the Mountain Meadows Massacre be as well known throughout this land as the sad 9/11 date that it shares with the World Trade Center Massacre.

  15. This was a terrible tragedy and very unknown in American history (for obvious reasons). What I found to be most alarming, is that the Utah Mormon church, still lays blame on the Fancher- Baker party, while “kissing-up” to the descendants of the emigrants.
Unfortunately, I currently live in Utah, and my children were raised in the public school system. They learned first-hand, how the Mormon history teachers, LIE about this massacre. Utah, and the Mormon church, are “married” in an adulturous affair.

  16. I am a direct descendant of The Wood Family

  17. How can I find out if I am a descendant? I have a very small family and don’t know any family history.

    • Did you get any information yet? If not, I may be able to help.

      • I have not found any info yet. How can I find out? My last name is Fancher.

    • Did you think about doing a DNA ancestry check with something like “23 and Me”? It’s about a hundred dollars, but if I thought I might be related to anyone in the Fancher-Baker wagon train, it would be worth it.

      • I have done a DNA test with ancestry.com I wouldn’t think they would be able to help with this because I don’t think they have DNA linked to Fanchers killed at Mt meadows. Maybe I can contact customer service to see if they can give more info. Thanks for the message.

      • I am a descendant of Nancy Huff. I know who her children was. Does anyone know who her grandchildren were? My grandfather was Jethro Dean. He lived at oak grove, just a short ways from where she was laid to rest. I was told she was my great, great grandmother. Any help would be appreciated.

    • If you have any older relatives ask them questions. Ask many different times. You might get different information each time. Start with yourself and work backwards. Unfortunately it is not easy to find information. Land records, obituaries, church records, census records can all help.

    • Jeremy – I am so sorry it has taken so long for me to reply; I have been bogged down in family crisis. I have done some initial work to find your Fancher relatives, but I need some personal information about your family members to finish the search. It would be best if you could contact me through my email address: camille@xmission.com.

Like I said, I have done the initial work, so it shouldn’t take to long to research the rest. -Camille-

  18. William Wood was my Greatx4 Grandfather. He and his brother, Solomon, also killed, were responsible for the cattle herd.
Does anyone know of any reunions planned in Arkansas or Mountain Meadows this year?
    Dawn Peters

  19. My name is Carl Cockrill, I just found out that my sister Tammy and I are descendents of Loiusa Dunlap. Our ggg grandmother was 2 years old when her family was attacked at Mountain Meadows. We would like to connect with others who are descended from the survivors of this atrocious event.

    • Mary Dunlap (mother of Louisa) is my gg grandmothers sister.

    • I replied eariler. Mary Dunlap & Nancy Dunlap are my gg grandmothers sisters.

  20. I’m a direct descendant if Nancy Huff Cates. I’d love to find more distant relatives here if so please contact me at abuckley7689@gmail.com thank you!

  21. I’m a decendent of the Keeling -Pruitt Family. My relatives that were killed in the Mountain Meadows Massacure. We’re 2 brother John and william Prewitt age 20 and 18.

  22. My name is Leonard Griffiths and I and my family are descendants on my Mother’s side, of William Campbell and Martha Beller, Jr. Had Martha not been pregnant, at the time of the departure of the Baker-Fancher wagon train, I and my relatives would never have been born. My Mother was Dorothy Lulabell Beller Griffiths and she was born in Indianola, Oklahoma Indian Territory in 1905. My 2 living brothers (Dennis & Lynn) and my 1 living sister (Reba Jo Griffiths Hitchcock) plus my cousin (William Travis Weesner) are all involved in the study of the MMM. – There is so much that I would like to share about my ggUncle David W. Beller (younger brother of William Campbell Beller, Jr.), but that’s enough for now. It is good to be able to connect with you through our common heritage. Keep in mind that the book: “The First 9/11 in America” is a historical/novel and I, humbly, became the person of 12 year-old David W. Beller. (It’s all there, in the book)

  23. Leonard Griffiths again. You can contact me at legriff@hughes.net. Also check out our other book: “The Bride Until” (which is about the true Biblical church – not denominations) and check out our two websites: caughtaway.org and caughtaway4jews.org available thanks to our dear friends and brothers-in-Christ, William Mays and Max Clement.

  24. I have been researching this event since I was able to verify relatives that were involved.
I used research for a college paper. I became aware that I have relatives from Arkansas that were traveling with the wagon train. But due to marriage I also may have relatives that members of the militia. I have suspicions but have not established factual proof. I have been to the site twice and would very much like to attend again. I’ll look forward to receiving information

  25. I had 17 relatives on that wagon train. The two Dunlap families..

  26. W.T Nebeker my mother has told us since we were young that her grandfather was a survivor. He remained in Utah and the truth was hidden for fear of retribution from the Mormons. On 9/11/2020 for some strange reason I ended up at the site and my mothers words were once again fresh. She had stated that her father took her there on horse back in 1932 and showed her the real grave site about one mile to the west over a small hill. Her story has always haunted me, and I have a deep desire to find the truth.

  27. The Indians didn’t kill my family ( Dunlap), the latter-day Saints did. Story has been told for generations. We know the truth and you guys made money off of our family death, on your movie, we just wish you would have told the truth. But the past is the past, and we know God has already taking care of all involved in this. So we are at peace with it. As long as our family knows the truth.

    • Nancy and Mary Dunlap are my g-g-grandmothers sisters. We went to the site 3 years ago….

  28. I hope I’m not inquiring about a subject that could be very unpopular but would anyone have any thoughts on the Walker, Turley, Leonard book, “Massacre at Mountain Meadows’? Along the same lines, any thoughts on the rather expensive “Volumes 1 & 2 Mountain Meadows Massacre – Legal Papers”

  29. Are there any Cameron descendants on here? I have met some, but it has been awhile. There were only 3 kids of William and Martha who had kids. Malinda, Matilda, and Nancy (daughter not niece) . I would love to talk with other descendants!

  30. I’m a descendant of Nancy Huff. I would like to know who her children’s children are so I can find who my relatives are. Thanks for any help.

    • Hi Roy, I am also a descendant of Nancy Huff. Feel free to email me abuckley7689@gmail.com

  31. Jesse Dunlap and Mary Wharton were my Great-Great-Great Grandparents. Louisa my Great-Great Grandmother was one of the surviving children. It’s amazing how many people have never heard the story. It’s nice to see people still talking about it. 🙂

    • Mary & Nancy Wharton were my great great grandmothers sisters. Have you seen the movie ‘September Dawn’ ?

  32. The Prewitt brothers (18 and 20 years old) are my great great uncles. According to our family history they were traveling to California to purchase some specific breed of horses and had been carrying a large sum of gold (which was obviously taken). When my great grandma later married a Mormon and converted, her family disowned her. I was raised in the church and finally left 12 years ago.

    • Good for you Annali! My name is Leonard Griffiths and 12-year old David Beller, on the Baker-Fancher Wagon Train was my GGreat Uncle on my Mother’s side of the family. His brother, William Campbell Beller, Jr. was my GGreat Frandfather. My Mother’s name was Dorothy Lulabelle Beller. For anyone interested, my wife and I have a published book titled: “The First 9/11 in America” and it is, of course, about the Mountain Meadows Massacre. You can watch a brief movie trailer by typing in the title and add my name. Also. we have another book titled: “The Bride Until” and you can also watch a movie trailer on that. God bless all of you blessed family members of MMM.

    • Leonard Griffiths here in Texas. My Mother was Dorothy Beller and that makes me a descendant of 12 year old David Beller who was on the Baker-Fancher Wagon Train. He was my ggreatUncle and his brother, William Campbell Beller, Jr. was my ggreatGrandfather. – You can check out our book titled: “The First 9/11 in America” on You Tube. Just type in the title and my name. Also, we have a book about the Church and it is titled: “The Bride Until”. – God bless all family members of the MMM.

  33. Thought that I had posted this already, will try again. – My name is Leonard E. Griffiths and I live in Texas. 12 year old David Beller, of the Baker-Fancher wagon train, was my ggreatUncle. – You can check out our book titled: “The First 9/11 in America: on You Tube by typing in the title and my name. Same is true of another book of our’s “The Bride Until” which is about the Church. – God bless all of the family members of MMM

    • There was also a movie. “September Dawn”, I believe.

  34. Appears someone is trying to make it look like my family is related to John D Lee. My grandson was just murdered. My dad was murdered. My dads dad was a Sinclair. She was adopted by Joseph Wilson. Brother of Woodrow Wilson. His wife died in Texas and she was adopted. Adopted by descendants of John D Lee. They were the family that married Jesse Curry. My grandmother married Walt Disney. Her son murdered in California. Then she married someone that was murdered before my dad was born. He was adopted by Disney. No way he was a Lee. My grandmother adopted sister(descendant of John d Lee ) stole the Sinclair oil company from them.

  35. Not sure if you guys know but it looks like the mormons baptized all the mountain Meadows victims…to me, that is so incredibly fucked up and inappropriate

    • Where did you look that up? Do you have a website you can share?

    • Do you mind sharing where you received the info regarding the baptism of the victims? This is new info to me. Very interesting.
      Dianna Gencarelli

    • Don’t appreciate your one choice of words, but actually whether the baptism thing is true or not, it doesn’t really matter because the Mormons are so ungodly, that it was (if true) just an exercise in futility. God’s justice will prevail in Eternity. Read my book: “The First 9/11 in America!”

  36. Thank you for this website! My g-g-g grandmother was the sister of Milam/Milum Rush. I have been looking for more information to clear up the wikitree page for their father’s ancestors. I am so glad to see that Milam’s ancestors have been researching him and honoring him, and I look forward to learning more.

  38. My name is John Rice (originally John Baker, jr.) and I am the great grandson of William Twitty Baker, one of the 17 survivors of the massacre. I only recently learned of this tragedy in my family’s history, but am glad to see continued support by descendants and acknowledgment of wrongdoing by the Mormon church. I am a bit curious about the period of time in my great grandfather life once he was returned to AR to an “uncle” by US troops.

  39. Eliza Fancher is my 5 times great grandmother. Through my fathers line. Have any descendents explored receiving reparations from the Mormons?

    • Not that I am aware of.

    • My Great Great Grandmother Malinda Cameron Scott Thurston tried for about 35 years before the US Supreme Court denied her petition.

  40. I am a direct descendant of Louisa Dunlap, who was 4 at the time of the massacre. I was recently watching a program on tv that claimed the wagon train was wiped out by sickness and disease. The remaining members either froze to death or ate the dead to try to survive. My question is, are they ever going to tell the truth, or do the Mormons sensor what the media reports in order not to get a black eye?

    • Hi Carl, it sounds like you’re confusing what happened to the Baker-Fancher Wagon Train at Mountain Meadows with what happened to members of the Donner Party in the winter of 1846-1846. Both emigrant parties were on their way to California (the Donner party coming from the Midwest via the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, and the Baker-Fancher party coming from Arkansas a decade later.

      • Maybe you are correct. I could have sworn they said 1857.

Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone

    • That sounds more like the Donner party.

    • My great Grandmothers aunts were Mary & Nancy Dunlap.

    • Hi Carl, it occurs to me I should have recommended something for you to read, to get you closer to the truth about what happened to your ancestors. One of the best books I’ve ever read on Mountain Meadows Massacre is by Juanita Brooks. The book is called, simply, The Mountain Meadows Massacre, & is (IMO) a factual retelling of what happened. Ms. Brooks was a Mormon scholar who told the truth. As a descendant of Mormons who lived in Manti, Utah at the time of the massacre, I am also a writer & historian dedicated to the terrible truth. Let it never be repeated, and so that it isn’t, it must never be forgotten.

      • I have a good idea of what happened. The show I was watching, I started in the middle of it and didn’t catch the whole thing. It was very similar in nature to the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

  41. Wondering if Jesse t tackett had close family in mountain massacre ?
